About Us

From the humble beginning of Bharati Bhaban in l920 and having weathered 89 long and eventful years and with a members strength of nearly 1700 today Bharati Bhaban is not just an institution, it is a legend.

It was first instituted as the Hirapur Indian Association. The object of the association was to provide recreation and social amenities to the residents of Burnpur for whom life was tedious with little or no room for relaxation. A makeshift auditorium was initially constructed then, after some land was allotted, a commodious building appeared on it in l923.

The association progressed rapidly. Annual Classical Music Conference began in l956 and stalwarts like Ustad Alauddin Khan, Ali Akbar Khan and Onkar Nath Thakur performed here besides a host of other legendary masters in the following years. Over the years the Association’s spread had widened and litterateurs, dramatists, poets and singers, all living legends took part in its activities. After independence, it assumed a new name – Bharati Bhaban in l948.

Just as IISCO grew, so did Bharati Bhaban, a livewire of activities hitherto unknown in the region. Drama, debate, recitation, music and art competitions evoked keen interest all around. In l971-72 began the Banga Sanskriti Utsav, which immediately made its mark as a popular event and Bharati Bhaban had definitely emerged as the nucleus of culture for Burnpur and its environs.
